Sinus Q & A

What are common sinus conditions?

There are several chronic conditions that can affect your sinuses, the air-filled cavities behind your forehead and cheeks. Dr. Reidy offers comprehensive care for sinus conditions like:

Polyps

Polyps are soft growths that develop on the lining of your sinuses or the interior of your nose. They can develop due to chronic inflammation triggered by allergies, asthma, or recurrent infections and become large enough to interfere with your breathing.

Sinusitis

Sinusitis is a condition that causes inflammation in your sinus cavity, usually due to an underlying bacterial infection. In chronic sinusitis, you may experience difficulties breathing due to the inflammation, and postnasal drip can trigger a persistent cough.

Sinus infections

Sinus infections can develop when bacteria or a virus settles into your sinus cavity. Infections can interfere with your breathing and cause thick mucus to drain from your sinuses.

Deviated septum

The septum is the divider between your two nostrils and is made up of bone and a mucous membrane. Due to an injury, your septum may move out of place and block your nasal passages.

What can I expect during diagnostic evaluation for sinus conditions?

During your sinus evaluation, Dr. Reidy takes time to review your medical history and discuss the type of symptoms you have.

Dr. Reidy also performs a physical exam of your nose and nasal passages, sometimes using a flexible fiber-optic tube to look into your sinus cavities.  If he needs more information to confirm a diagnosis, you may need imaging tests, like X-rays or a CT scan.

Once he understands the cause of your symptoms, Dr. Reidy creates a treatment plan to ease your existing symptoms and address the root cause of your condition.

What treatments are available for sinus conditions?

If you have a mild sinus condition, Dr. Reidy may recommend over-the-counter saline solutions to irrigate and moisturize your nasal passages.

He may recommend the following for other cases:

  • Allergy shots
  • Sublingual drop
  • Biologic therapies
  • Xolair, Nucala
  • Fasenra
  • Dupixent

When symptoms result from chronic sinusitis, Dr. Reidy may recommend an oral corticosteroid to reduce inflammation and a saline spray to prevent dryness in your nasal passages.

If you have large nasal polyps or a deviated septum that interferes with your breathing, Dr. Reidy may recommend surgery. He uses the latest endoscopic techniques to remove polyps without causing unnecessary trauma to your nose.

Dr. Reidy also specializes in minimally invasive techniques to repair a deviated septum, straightening the bone to improve your breathing.
